ABSTRACT

Self-direction is often sacrificed in the pursuit of fame, and a number of celebrities report that they became victims of the "star system" by being exploited and manipulated in an environment where getting the role was so very important. Siddig El Fadil was cast in DS9 in 1992 and achieved overnight celebrity, as does anyone who is cast as a regular character on Star Trek. He had the shortest resume of the cast regulars and was a complete unknown to the American television audience. Ava Gardner's autobiography reflects an individual who grew up in an extremely poor family so that when she arrived in Hollywood with the promise of a steady income, a glamorous lifestyle, and beautiful clothes to wear, she embraced all of these things, happy to have achieved security. In the third season of DS9, Chase Masterson came on the show as the popular recurring guest star, Leeta, the Dabo girl.
