ABSTRACT

Celebrity is an easy thing to study at a distance because its influence is everywhere, but one should not take for granted the extent of cultural influence that celebrities exert. It has always been easy for academics to sit in the "Ivory Tower" and theorize about such things. There has been a fair amount of misunderstanding about this term, parasocial. The official definition means that the relationship is non-reciprocated or one-way. One possibility involves a very specific form of PSR, the "celebrity worshipper," a concept put forth by Lynn McCutcheon, John Maltby, and others and measured using the Celebrity Attitude Scale. In 1992, at a Michael Jackson show at Wembley Stadium in London, cameras recorded fans overcome and fainting. On that day, fans had been standing out on the field in more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit for five or more hours.
