ABSTRACT

Chapter 16 by Amy Nitza, serves as the introduction to the international disasters section of this book. It reflects on the essence of disasters and highlights the way in which they can lead people to question the nature of the world they live in, and their place in it. Nitza offers a useful primer to the five chapters to follow by introducing the reader to the cultural context of the disasters which will be covered and the authors writing on them. The challenges of building local DMH capacity in low-resource settings are clarified and cultural humility is encouraged amongst DMH responders.
