ABSTRACT

This chapter relays the experiences of Joseph O. Prewitt Diaz, Disaster Mental Health Advisor and widely-published author on community-based psychological support programs, following the 1998 Las Casitas Mudslide in Nicaragua which occurred when a lake overflowed and caused part of a mountain to crumble, sending mud and rock down on surrounding villages. The reader is given an idea of the impact that responding to this disaster has had on the personal life of Prewitt Diaz, and also describes the unique challenges and approaches to be taken when delivering DMH response in a low-resource setting.
