ABSTRACT

The granite industry is rightly associated with Aberdeen, for, though quarrying is carried on in Kirkcudbright, Cornwall, and Devon, and manufacturing in various towns, like Glasgow, Dalbeattie, and Penryn, it is in North-east Scotland that the major part is located. In South Scotland there is granite quarrying in Galloway, but on a much smaller scale. There the industry is carried on in two places, Dalbeattie and Creetown. At the former quarrying was commenced about 1820, and manufacturing in all its branches have been well established, though on a comparatively small scale. The granite industry proper, and the one popularly associated with Aberdeen, is concerned primarily with quarrying and the manufacture of dressed and polished stones for buildings and monuments. Thus defined, Aberdeen is the chief centre of the industry in the United Kingdom. Hence, granite manufacturers confine themselves to fashioning the rough stone into finished products and leave the quarrying to the quarriers.
