ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the new intersections of digital and pedagogical practice, both by outlining some of the theoretical perspectives informing digital education and by examining the reality of policy and practice that shape what real teachers and learners can achieve. It shows how theoretical understandings of learning can inform planned, purposeful activities to help students learn more effectively. The book describes the complexity of learning theories in ways that are interpretable by designers, drawing on new evidence from the learning sciences. It explores the practices of design from the perspective of the practitioner. The book discusses a range of specific influences on current pedagogic practice, starting with a set of design principles for mobile learning. It discusses professional learning and its relationship to real world practice.
