ABSTRACT

Audiovisual or multimedia resources, often in the form of educational or popular films, television shows, broadcasts, podcasts, and YouTube postings, enhance understanding of an abstract conceptual topic. Multimedia resources present alternative ways to think about and approach lecture topics. Instructors may show or post the multimedia source and then engage the class in discussion. Alternatively, an instructor may link a written assignment to the media source as application for complex conceptual or abstract course topics. Applying these concepts to media resources enhances understanding and comprehension of the course lectures and readings. The basic skills necessary for addressing media application assignments include identifying examples of a concept in the source and then explaining how that example illustrates the concept. A literature review presentation typically includes the same material as a research presentation, except that the expectation for a clear grasp of the content is somewhat lower than it would be for a description of a student’s own research findings.
