ABSTRACT

This chapter provides examples for practices and expectations regarding referencing styles commonly used in political science. Students should check their syllabus or assignment handout concerning their written assignments for specific details for the format and instructor’s preferred reference style. The footnote and endnote system of referencing has a particular style and format. Footnotes and endnotes should include the following information separated by commas. Footnotes and endnotes must contain complete citation information, at least in the first citation of the source, so papers with references in footnotes or endnotes do not contain a bibliography, the reference page, or works cited page. There are occasions when a bibliography is required. If required, then the information in the bibliography is the same as the information included in the footnotes or endnotes in the first citation of the source, but the format is different.
