ABSTRACT

This chapter includes an extract from a Project Management Manual used by Dataskil Limited, a software house subsidiary of International Computers Limited. It argues that any work which involves a computer-based technique can be defined as computer project. Thus a computer project could be anything from programmer hire to the design and implementation of a large complex computer system. Projects are and always will be only as good as people who staff them. A project management structure will highlight poorly managed projects in time for them to be saved from disaster. The person who is responsible for the day-to-day management of any project can be defined as the project manager. The management responsibility could be for anything from two programmers working on a customer site to a large project involving many analysts and programmers. It is very easy to overlook the delays that may be caused by not considering the way project's workload will affect other departments.
