ABSTRACT

Under this heading, after having examined the most diverse records of crime, I propose to survey briefly, from the point of view of social history, certain individuals, circumstances and happenings and their part, now great, now small, in the administration of justice. I shall continue to make use of the authorities mentioned in my introduction, and must of necessity 122indicate rather than describe, since a closer examination of the material, as well as any attempt to grapple with outside sources, would take me too far from the subject of this work.
