Body mapping different parts of the left hand will help students understand teacher instructions and will increase awareness of how to shape the different parts of their hand as it relates to the instrument. Finger placement markers are controversial because some teachers and performers fear that students will use their eyes rather than their ears to locate the correct pitch, thus impeding their ability to develop good intonation and aural skills. For that reason, many teachers use finger tapes as an aid for developing both the left-hand frame and a solid foundation for pitch. Silvie is strophic in form, meaning the melody repeats with different lyrics on each refrain. The left hand should be balanced and free of tension. One of the fundamental principles of proper setup on a string instrument is the ability for students to support the instruments without the assistance of the left hand.
