ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to report the findings from a series of studies undertaken to explore: the relationships between reasons or motives for use of alcohol and other drugs; and the domains of private personality, measured by the scales in assessment battery. An important issue in understanding the use of various chemical substances by young people is the extent to which "the user" differentiates among various chemicals with respect to the attainment of a specific desired effect. The chapter examines different patterns and reasons for using substances and determines if motivational clusters of reasons for using particular substances are manifestations of more general personality styles. It provides individual indicators, subsamples, and methods of analysis, data and results. An important aspect of the analysis is the finding that there is a developing pattern of preference for one substance in certain situations or for certain effects among youth who use more than one drug.
