ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the curricular aspects of internationalisation. It argues that there is an emerging need for networked international classrooms – virtual spaces where students and professors can share, teach, and learn together across national borders, thereby creating an authentic and interpersonally dynamic pathway to an international curriculum. The chapter discusses the affordances of the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) format and its practical application, and deals with a more detailed explication of how engaging COIL can aid students to prepare for international virtual work. COIL courses are embedded in the curriculum, so they are available to students as part of their regular university program. The COIL model takes advantage of internet technology to authentically engage other cultures from within the local classroom, providing a unique approach to internationalising the curriculum. Curricular internationalisation is a response to the issue of relative low student mobility.
