ABSTRACT

One of the key rationale behind the three ages of learning is that there are deep changes taking place in society. This chapter looks at ten social truths and discusses how they are changing in the context of our modern world. The text looks at fundamental issues, like how learning that was very social in the pre-industrial age, being rooted in local communities, has moved to be less so in the industrial age, but could arguably be much more social with the sensible embedding of communications technology. Other topics explored are literacy, the fact that knowledge is no longer power and the role of the family in learning in our modern era.
