ABSTRACT

True scientific thinking ideally refers to a search for the truth and a willingness to listen to alternative viewpoints and accept them if they are reasonable. It differs from political thinking that tends to align with a certain ideology. There is a case for introducing more scientific thinking in public debate. This can only be achieved by education. Some areas of education that are not given sufficient attention relate to hygiene, nutrition, money management, and exercise. The role of wonder in childhood education and the use of magic are two areas that could be beneficial. One area that may not be given sufficient emphasis is that of critical thinking. Some ideas are suggested for introducing it in classes. Simple examples are given to illustrate how to analyze statements and not to accept them without question. Some common tricks are exposed such as deflection of an issue, putting labels on opponents, and recognizing how people’s acceptance of facts can be influenced by their ideological prism.
