ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the continued use of pre-internet networks, and wire services and bulletin boards deployed for user (i.e., reader) interaction. It briefly reviews the integration of decentralized computer networks in newsrooms, with a mix of content-management systems and PCs, and the increasing use of pagers/cellphones for reporting/news-gathering, including the shift from “portable” to mobile conceptualizations for these technologies. Early efforts toward digital photography are very quickly surveyed.
