ABSTRACT

This chapter brings to the forefront the material and emotional ways that the women use to counter domestic violence. It bases the analysis on some cases of domestic violence between husbands and wives and mothers- and daughters-in-law to trace the voice of slum women and to uncover how they are trying to establish their rights in their unfavorable position. To explore the changing views and experiences of slum women regarding domestic violence in their changed social settings, this chapter finds answers to the following questions from the Hindu and Muslim women of the slums: How do slum women view and experience domestic violence in their marital lives? What kinds of changes have they seen when individuals have tried to seek help for domestic violence in the slum? How do women fight and resist domestic violence against them? If women have economic independence, why do they stay with violent husband and affines in a violent home?
