ABSTRACT

Global population growth has been at a peak in recent decades, and several measures of migration have been at a high level. The documentation of migration has improved in recent times, for several reasons. National governments and other institutions are better able to keep records, more people are migrating, and global patterns of migration are becoming more consistent. International migration is a central factor in linking labor to economic production. For this reason, governments, universities, and international organizations conduct detailed study of international migration. Migration itself becomes a social change as soon as it involves large numbers of people in processes such as urbanization or settlement of new lands. Migration is a cause of social transformation as well as its result. Through its expansion of diaspora communities, migration has added new dynamics to localized societies. Popular culture has grown steadily under both direct and indirect influence of migration.
