ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 unpacks the ‘4+1’ model of leadership: that there are four key skills, Thinking, Doing, Team Building and Motivating, and one extra non-skill, more quality, that of self-awareness and self-development, which is essential if true leadership is to be exercised. Metaphors for leadership – as performance, teamwork, and play – are explored, and this leads to consciously developing self-awareness and ways to do so. Each of the four skills is also explored in a preliminary way, as preparation for more detailed analysis in subsequent chapters.
