ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 moves to explore the first major skill of leadership: Thinking. A short diagnostic is included to help each individual rate how effective they think they are for each of the ‘4+1’ attributes. A new tool is introduced, The Five Elements Model. This heuristic device is a problem-solving – so ‘thinking’ – tool to help any leader understand any problem more fully, and to provide a systematic way of addressing any such problems as are inevitable with leadership. In particular, the chapter extends The Five Elements Model to oversee the four main domains of organisational life – Finance, Marketing/Sales, Operations/Service and People – and the nine resources that feed these four domains.
