ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 returns to the subject of the 360° Appraisal using Mapping Motivation. But in this case it is when we have a seriously problematic leader – indeed, one whom we discover, as we delve more deeply into their maps and 360° Motivational Team Maps, is unsuited for leadership in the first place. Alan is a case study where we look at leadership in a ‘warts and all’ sort of approach and where we do not pretend that using Motivational Maps can be a panacea in every situation. Clearly, some appointments are square pegs in round holes, and the Motivational Maps, especially using 360° team appraisals, can provide perhaps one of the fastest ways of identifying appointment errors, and then being able to correct them. Leadership, too, is considered from the aspect of support and challenge and what this means for our leadership of others.
