ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 considers how motivation fits into finding the employee voice. It starts by reviewing how the traditional metric – the staff survey – is really inadequate for the task, and points towards reasons for the superior benefits of using Motivational Maps. Specific team and individual Motivational Maps are explored in considerable detail and used to clarify these benefits. By studying an individual’s Motivational Map it becomes clear that the employee voice is being heard, for the Map reveals what they truly want, which is not necessarily what they think they want. From this the familiar model of management challenge and support is examined alongside naming the four key mind-sets that support the employee voice: taking personal responsibility, avoiding blaming others, showing positive regard in all one’s interactions, and being genuine at all times.
