ABSTRACT

The Introduction provides a brief overview of engagement as it has been covered academically over the last 50 years or so in the work of William Kahn, Hackman and Oldman, Jean-Marie Hiltrop, Chris Aryris, David Kolb, Arie de Geus, David Bowles and Cary Cooper, and Studs Terkel, as well as more recent writers. It notes the accelerating speed of change, particularly cultural and technological, in the world of work and how the old models of scientific management are no longer effective. Indeed, command-and-control hierarchies need to be turned upside down, and if organisations wish to be successful they must engage their employees with a bottom-up approach. Aspects and benefits of employee engagement are described, and the reader is invited to do a Motivational Map.
