ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 explores further ways we can develop engaging managers. Traditionally, values have been presented as lists of nouns; values as verbs and verbal propositions are introduced as being more effective. Links between values and the nine motivators are suggested. An anonymised, but real, Motivational Organisational Map data table is presented and the organisation’s espoused values are compared with their employees’ actual motivators. The four skills of the engaging manager described in Chapter 5 are broken down into 12 subskills and a mini-training skills analysis tool is provided. The importance of management self-awareness is stressed and explained, and a novel application of using Motivational Maps as a 360° feedback mechanism for growth by adapting a Motivational Team Map is studied in detail. Reward strategies are essential, and the chapter outlines how a ‘rainbow’ of rewards can be deployed by engaging managers.
