ABSTRACT

A setting that supports writing for publication can be part of a successful healthcare improvement community. Reviewing and revising are processes where colleagues are constantly assisting each other to develop writing that is clear and sensible. A place to start is to address the question, when and where do you write? Four busy productive authors were asked that question in an email one Sunday morning. They provided answers by sundown. The striking similarities in their generous responses provided examples of the challenges that all authors face. Finding time that fits into work and family commitments is at the heart of this challenge. How would you answer that question? In addition to identifying the time and place for one's own personal writing, consider a similar strategy for regular writing and reviewing together with colleagues. Four examples of formal writing groups provide strategies for establishing a local writing collaborative; six steps summarize these strategies for establishing such a writing group. They also provide strategies for maintaining momentum in the writing collaborative.
