ABSTRACT

When the author's improvement initiative has been validated and its changes are part of a new normal in the institution, that is an appropriate time to submit a paper for publication. The author should select an intended journal early in the writing process to take advantage of efficiencies that address journal format, editorial idiosyncrasies and submission technicalities. A diverse group of journals increasingly welcome scholarly healthcare improvement submissions. Before going too far, the author should step back and assure IRB issues have been addressed. Once the paper is submitted and in the journal review process, the author should be fully responsive to reviewers’ advice. Take advantage of the journal's review process to improve the paper. Should the submission be accepted, the author's job still is not finished. The author should bring the paper's publication to the attention of colleagues and help institutional leadership be aware of the paper and its reflection on the institution's commitment to patient care improvement and safety. Now that the improvement report is published, it begins its new life as colleagues encounter it and as new scholarly reports become part of this same continuum of new knowledge.
