ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the main trends in company training as they affect computer based training (CBT). The relationship between these trends and further development is indirect in the sense that accelerating needs do not necessarily lead to greater investment in CBT, although they may well do so. The accelerating rate of change in industry and commerce implies accelerating needs for training and retraining. A merging of training and the job is occurring. Many jobs require less initial training than before, because training is available on the job, often in the form of job-aids. There are signs that training is becoming more diverse to meet the increased demand for flexibility in jobs. For increasing numbers of employees, their future training is likely to be for higher level and more complex tasks. In some companies, management makes clear that resources available for training are fixed or even likely to shrink, and that increased cost-effectiveness is the key to any increased training provision.
