ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that banks, financial and insurance companies have taken the lead in exploiting computers and communications for training their employees. Companies in the financial sector were extending or considering the extension of their networks. The urgent needs of some financial institutions led them to choose generic microcomputer-based computer based training (CBT) software and/or interactive videodisc, rather than taking time to develop their own or have it developed for them. A development in the 1970s was the close linking of clients' computers with those of banks and other financial institutions. The chapter consists of case studies of CBT in several large financial institutions in the United States and Britain such as Abbey National Building Society, American Express, Bank of America, Paynet, Barclaycard, Barclays Bank, Hartford Insurance Group, and Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance. They also include Lloyds Bank, National Westminster Bank, Stewart Wrightson, UNUM Life Insurance and USLIFE.
