ABSTRACT

Student mental health can be addressed via the provision of services from school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, and other mental-health professionals. Academic achievement is affected at multiple organizational levels. Whereas some effects occur at the classroom level, students are always nested within larger school structures. “Organization” is a broad term that refers to numerous aspects of schooling. Organizational features are largely determined by school administrators, and many are dependent on funding. Services designed to support academic success also at times are implemented at the school level. Whereas there are many extant socioemotional learning (SEL) programs, research suggests that when schools implement SEL programs that are evidence-based and when those programs are implemented with fidelity, students’ achievement is enhanced. Whereas instructional practices are often determined by classroom teachers, there are many instructional practices that are implemented at the school level.
