ABSTRACT

Sam was referred by his paediatrician for an assessment for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Autism Diagnosis Observation Schedule (ADOS) Module 3 is a semi-structured, standardised assessment of possible ASD. ASD can create a number of challenges for the individual and their family, in areas such as social functioning and accessing appropriate education. ASDs are a range of neurodevelopmental disorders characterised by rigid behaviours and by significant impairment in social communication. In the communication domain, Sam generally used sentences appropriately. In summary, Sam presents with deficits in social-emotional reciprocity and non-verbal communication. His score in the High range is consistent with both his current presentation and developmental history and suggests he experiences clinically significant symptoms of autism. Sam displayed unusual eye contact during social exchanges and minimal use of nonverbal gestures. The examiner observed Sam at school across multiple settings.
