ABSTRACT

Information, the need for more and more of it and the increasing speed at which it is required, must be one of the biggest single contributors to management stress. The potential for information systems is to move towards a role where they support the integrating goals across organizations, ensuring that one of the core competences of all successful organizations will be in the management of information and the systems by which it is provided. Systems directed at control and monitoring are basically translations of previous manual processes or they are externally bought-in systems where management processes have been altered to fit the system purchased. Exploiting the developments to re-engineer the business to enable people to adapt and change will require continuous learning and development. All of the areas could be addressed through an information systems solution, which may require a very different management approach but will mean a quantum leap in effectiveness.
