ABSTRACT

Self-reliance is more than just a useful heading under which to explore the major people issues facing businesses. It is an attempt to get managers to assume ownership and take responsibility for the way in which their businesses develop and progress. Many different companies have grabbed at the phrase Think global, act local' but this is a key component of self-reliance. The ability to understand the big picture and translate it into relevant action in one's own area of responsibility is absolutely essential in dealing with the issues. There are some very simple and straightforward actions and approaches that could be adopted which would enhance an organization's capability to compete successfully. Organizations are in a far stronger position to respond quickly and effectively to whatever change throws their way. For what they will have done is moved away from control as a management philosophy towards one based on gaining the commitment of all the individuals who work for them.
