ABSTRACT

A management technique is 'a recognised method of analysing or solving a recognised type of management problem in a detailed, systematic way'. A management problem is any situation in which a manager has to take a management decision. Some management techniques do lean heavily upon mathematics and others can possibly be said to be founded on scientific method, but neither mathematics nor science are the cornerstones. All management techniques do, however, depend heavily on the systematic, methodical, logical, rational approach: the careful, detailed, analytical dissection of problems or assembly of solutions. The other technique, Linear Programming, is a wonderful example of a technique which helps to solve a problem—in fact it solves a particular sort of problem so much better than any manager can that one has little option but to accept the solution. Each management technique can be unambiguously described.
