ABSTRACT

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are overrepresented in U.S. jails and prisons at nearly every level. They also experience mistreatment from the time they enter the correctional system until, and even after they are released or paroled. Inmate treatment can have long-term consequences in areas of health, employment, and psychological well-being. These effects are well-known and are often used to politically marginalize LGBT people and instill fear. Two key documents providing policy options include “American Bar Association Standards for Criminal Justice: Treatment of Prisoners,” and the “National Prison Rape Elimination Commission Report, 2009.”
