ABSTRACT

In Nigeria, the role of game reserves in conserving wildlife for various purposes (but particularly as a tourist attraction) is widely recognized. It is recognized also that the fauna constitute only one element of the complex ecosystems to which they belong and that these ecosystems are not necessarily in a stable state. Accordingly, for areas set aside as game reserves it is desirable that an understanding of the ecosystems present be developed so that any operation carried out is directed towards ensuring the establishment and maintenance of a situation which meets as effectively as possible the long-term requirements of management.
