ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the study of statistical relationship using the bivariate table. It opens with an example of the relationship between religious affiliation and happiness as measured in the General Social Survey 2016 sample. Next the chapter reviews data preparation. This includes descriptions of the data matrix, data coding, and data cleaning, and calculation of univariate statistics. The univariate statistics are used in part to help identify and correct errors in the data (data cleaning). The next section contains a systematic description of the bivariate table: how to read and interpret it, rules for reading and calculating the percentages in a bivariate table, and the correspondence between a bivariate table and its transpose.
