ABSTRACT

This chapter serves as introduction to the work as a whole, outlining the contributions of the dead and Jung’s engagement. Included here is mention of Jung’s death dreams, his confrontation with the unconscious and his entrée into The Red Book’s compostion. Spirits as true presentations vs projections is raised as well as the discussion of defining the dead as Jung did. Outlined is the terrain of Jungian scholarship on the dead and the possible questions raised if we take them to be literal agents in the psyche. The implications of considering the dead to be central in Jung’s psychological model is also posed.
