ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 examines Philemon at the end of Liber Secundus as an introduction to his role as teacher and guide of the dead in Scrutinies. He is presented here as a magician who is able to access the magic contained in the chaos that is the unconscious. The episode of the poisoner who hanged for killing his family is discussed here. Of importance is Jung’s fascination with the poisoner’s condition in the afterlife as well as his surprise at the lack of self-awareness the poisoner seems to have.
