ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an assessment tool that can be undertaken alone, and then shared together, to help couples consider the condition of their relationship, and the areas where they would like to see change and growth. It begins by exploring perceived relationship satisfaction and then explains the different components of a relationship, namely compatibility, intimacy, lifestyle and communication, and why each is important to relationship satisfaction. The ground rules for a successful relationship are also explored. The process of assessment does not in any way imply that difficulties in the relationship were the cause of the addiction, but rather allows couples to consider if, in spite of the addiction, there is enough good within their relationship that they would like to salvage.
