ABSTRACT

The focus of the meaning stage is to develop a shared understanding of why the addiction occurred and what this means to the couple relationship. For some couples the process of therapeutic disclosure throws them temporarily back into impact, but generally couples begin to be ready to explore meaning after approximately 6 months post initial disclosure or discovery. Like the impact stage, emotions may still be running high, but with more individual coping skills developed, the therapist’s task is to encourage clients to explore what’s left of their relationship and what would be required if the relationship is to continue. With many clients still unsure if they want the relationship to survive, this is also the time to consider options for divorce or separation. During this phase therapy should focus on: Exploring relationship satisfaction before discovery or disclosure to help clients consider if they wish to save the relationship.
