ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a developmental approach to fostering teacher candidate engagement with P–12 students. To assist teacher candidates and mentors in this learning process, preparation programs should gradually expose teacher candidates to the complexity of teaching without overwhelming them. Effective mentorship requires setting clear expectations or targets for superior performance in teaching. Thus, the Interactions Matrix is a tool that can help mentor teachers make adjustments to the Developmental Curriculum to serve their specific classroom needs. Various representations of teaching practice are often communicated through teaching standards, through observations or videos of expert teachers, and through narratives of practice. The chapter explains High-Leverage Teaching Practices as a guide for identifying and developing explicit representations for practice. High-Leverage Teaching Tasks and their associated rubrics provide explicit representations and decompositions for coaching and evaluating high-leverage teaching practices. The Developmental Curriculum for Clinical Experiences is a tool that can be used in several ways when talking with teacher candidates.
