ABSTRACT
A revaluation of American and European historiography on ancient Israel in the mid-1980s, criticising especially the problem of text-based approaches for writing such a history, and showing the positive implications of assessing Israel's history from social science perspectives and in particular from theoretical and thematic developments in other fields of general history.
