ABSTRACT
A discussion on the historiographically debatable question of searching for ‘ancient/early Israel’, the historical and social (Christian) roots of the search in German and American scholarship, the politics of the reconstructions of Israel’s past and the historiographical value of the Hebrew Bible in current Old Testament historiography in the light of the maximalist-minimalist debate of the 1990s.
