ABSTRACT

A business is not just a collection of people any more than a house is a collection of bricks. A house has to withstand the weather as a business has to withstand competition - that it so say it has to make a profit. It used to be thought that the only effective motivation of human beings was money. This has been proved a fallacy. Nobody wants money for its own sake and most people want it for different reasons. The old idea that management’s job was simply to tell people what to do have given way to the realization that some people resent being told what to do, while others insist on being guided and is lost without positive direction. The main object of a manager is to engender maximum co-operation in achieving a given objective, not merely to be an autocrat whose subordinates act as automata.
