ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research methods available for the investigation of teacher's beliefs. It explores teachers' beliefs, views and understandings about mathematics play in mathematical education. The chapter helps the reader to understand the research methods that were available for exploring teachers' understandings of mathematics. It also discusses some of the issues raised whilst researching teachers' beliefs. The chapter focuses on beliefs and sought only to touch on the ways in which these beliefs might affect teachers' attitudes to their teaching. It then discusses primarily the research methods available for the investigation of teachers' beliefs about mathematics. The chapter concentrates on the constraints and practical issues arising for researchers attempting to 'uncover' teachers' beliefs and shows some of the caveats identified during data analysis and fieldwork. It concludes by broadening the debate away from mathematics to other subjects within the school curriculum.
