ABSTRACT

From 1990 to 1993, the authors engaged in a curriculum research and development project entitled 'Economic Awareness as a Curriculum Entitlement in Wales'. At the heart of this project was the cross-curricular theme economic and industrial understanding (EIU). Industrial understanding has been identified as one of five such themes by the Curriculum Council for Wales (CCW) and the National Curriculum Council (NCC) as a non-statutory element in the whole curriculum of primary and secondary schools. The participants in the project were largely co-ordinators of EIU in secondary schools and, over the three years of the project's life. The authors engage in a reflective analysis of transcript data derived from interviews of a number of these co-ordinators and locate. They encouraged EIU coordinators to find solutions to specific school-based problems relating to curriculum design and implementation. The authors describe this work broadly as technical in character, following the usage of the term technical by such commentators as Whitty and Davies.
