ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on what biodiversity is and why it is important. It looks at habitat restoration and options for preserving biodiversity in the earth’s remaining forest areas. The chapter discusses the concept of permaculture that is ways to practise agriculture that work with nature to promote biodiversity. It also discusses how energy can be provided in ways that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promote biodiversity. A huge emphasis is placed on minimising GHG emissions, to mitigate the impacts of climate change. There are various arguments for and against the practice of habitat fracturing. While global biodiversity is often reported as total loss of species, the functionality of ecosystems and the services they provide have been shown to be more dependent on measuring local biodiversity. The global effort to manage the environment really began in 1972 with the UN Conference on Human Environment, held in Stockholm, where the United Nations Environment Programme was first established.
