ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion on bringing access to potable water to rural communities, followed by sanitation facility options and discusses wastewater treatment methods. It discusses options for managing water resources in a more sustainable way ensuring all water services are provided, for future generations. Faecal contamination of water can be prevented by sanitation facilities and wastewater treatment. The quality of the water will impact their consumption, for example bad-tasting or smelling water may put animals off drinking, which will impact their ability to produce milk, or impact their quality of their meat. A more affordable option could be solar disinfection, where the water is exposed to solar radiation. Improved sanitation facilities are defined as those which ensure separation of human waste from human contact. In areas where flushing sanitation facilities exist, it is essential that this water is treated prior to discharge into natural waterways.
