ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 introduces public service announcements, also known as PSAs, and provides an overview of their purpose, structure, style and tone. The chapter offers real-world examples to illustrate to readers how public service announcements are designed to educate the public on various topics. It explores how PSAs are different from other forms of public relations writing and advertising and how they are promoted by the media at no cost as a service to the community. The chapter uses examples to demonstrate how to format PSAs of varying lengths for different channels, such as a print, radio and video. The public service announcement template provides readers with a user-friendly guide for crafting PSAs. The chapter concludes with two exercises related to PSAs: an exercise related to crafting a PSA and formatting it for different channels and an editing exercise related to Associated Press Style.
