ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 shows how psychoanalysis replicates the classical philosophical ‘body mind’ debate, adhering to categorical, evaluative and developmental fissures between psyche and soma. With contemporary psychoanalysis displaying a growing recognition of psyche and soma non-duality, the need arises for extra-disciplinary theorems to step beyond these engrained presuppositions. Phenomenology is shown to provide some support for a co-joint psyche-soma unit. The potential advantages of Eastern non-dual formulations – free of Platonic and Cartesian heritages – in providing these alternative meta-theoretical paradigms are discussed.
